Give medication on the round
Recording a regular dose as given, not given or given by others, and what happens when it is a controlled drug.
The medication round lists today's regular doses for every young person in the home. You record what happened to each one as you go.
Before you start
Recording needs in-date medication training. If yours is not in date you can see the round but not record on it, and ARC says so at the top of the page. Medication administration training is kept on your staff training record, so ask your manager if yours looks wrong.
If your home is not yet live, the round shows Running alongside paper: the paper MAR from the pharmacy is still the legal record, and ARC records beside it.
Record a dose
- Open Medication. The page is headed Medication round and shows today. Use the arrows to look at another day.
- Find the dose under Due now. Doses are grouped by young person. A dose can be recorded from an hour before its time.
- Choose Record dose. A dose whose window has closed shows Missed and the button reads Record late.
- Say what happened. Choose Given, Not given or Given by others.
- For Given, check the seven rights shown on the form, then tick I have checked all seven. The time defaults to now; change it only if you are recording a dose given earlier.
- Select Record as given.
If it was not given
Choose Not given, then why (for example Refused or Asleep) and what was done about it. You can choose more than one action. Choosing Senior informed tells every senior in the home in ARC; Manager informed tells every manager and deputy.
Given by others
Use Given by others when a school, parent or carer gave it. ARC asks who reported it.
Late entries
If you record a dose more than 15 minutes after it was given, or after its window closed, ARC asks why before it will save. In a live home a late entry goes to the manager to review. This does not apply to Given by others.
Controlled drugs
A controlled drug shows CD and Needs a witness. Choose a witness from the list, which holds only staff with in-date training. They confirm on their own login, and ARC expects it within the hour; after that it is marked overdue but can still be confirmed. Until they do, the dose shows Given · witness pending. ARC also reminds you to write it in the paper CD book too — the paper book is the home's legal register.
If you are the named witness, Waiting on you on the round shows a Confirm button. Opening it shows what was recorded, and Confirm I witnessed this is the only action.
If you recorded the wrong thing
Open Show recorded doses and choose Flag a mistake. A manager or deputy looks at it. The entry itself is not changed.
