Plans and plan types
What a plan is in ARC, the eight types you can choose from, and how to read one.
A plan is the home's own written approach to one part of a young person's care. Most of the rest of the record hangs off it: risk assessments belong to a plan, and logs and keywork sessions can be attached to a plan's goals.
Plans are the home's documents. The local authority's Care Plan, Placement Plan and Pathway Plan are a separate record — see Statutory care plans.
The eight types
The type is chosen once, when the plan is created.
| Type | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Care Plan | The overarching care plan — how the home meets day-to-day needs |
| Education | Attendance, school communication, and interventions that reduce barriers to learning |
| Health Care | Health actions, appointments, medication, and escalation contacts |
| Positive Behaviour Support | Proactive strategies, de-escalation, and post-incident support |
| Placement | The placement plan / placement information record, including the scope of authority delegated to the home |
| Independence | Preparation for adulthood and the pathway plan for a young person aged 16+ |
| Missing From Home | Agreed response when the young person goes missing — triggers, trusted locations, return actions |
| Custom | A plan the home names itself, for anything outside the set above |
A Custom plan asks for a Plan Name as well as a title. That name is what appears wherever the plan type is shown.
Health Care, Education and Positive Behaviour Support are the three types with a full structured form behind them — sections and named fields. The other five carry the shared title, Structured Summary, dates and goals.
For now, Education and Health Care plans open with a Purpose of this plan panel: a fixed statement of what that type of plan is for. It is wording ARC supplies, not something you write or edit. On those two types it takes the place of the Structured Summary box, which they no longer have. The other plan types show no panel yet. Positive Behaviour Support has no Structured Summary box either.
The questions and prompts in the structured plans use the young person's preferred name, or their first name if there is no preferred name, and "the young person" if ARC has neither.
The Positive Behaviour Support plan has 11 sections and is one plan for every age. It opens with My Voice, the young person's own words. Section 10, Risk Management of Potential Behaviours, is written on the plan itself. The young person's risk assessments are separate records, listed with the plan; the section does not replace them. When the plan's review date is 28 days away or has passed, the plan appears in Due & Overdue for the manager.
The Health Care plan is more than one type among eight: it is the young person's health record. See Health.
Status
| On screen | What it means |
|---|---|
| Draft | Being written. Not yet something the team is asked to read. |
| Active | Live. Every member of the home is asked to confirm they have read it. |
| Archived | No longer in force. Kept on the record. |
A new plan is Active unless it is saved as a draft. To retire a real plan, archive it. A plan made by mistake can be deleted by the manager, which keeps it on record rather than erasing it.
Draft and archived plans are excluded from read-confirmations and from the health safety banner.
Reading a plan
Open the young person's profile, choose Plans, and select a plan. The detail page opens on three tabs:
- Overview — the completed plan, rendered from its type's sections, plus its risk assessments
- Documents — files attached to the plan
- Goals — the plan's goals
The header carries the status, the type, the review date, and Download PDF. Any member of the home can export a plan they can already read.
The plan's own risk assessments are listed with it, and New risk assessment starts another. If a read-confirmation is outstanding, an amber banner sits above the tabs. See Plan read-confirmations.
The home-wide list
Plans at /homes/{home}/plans lists every plan in the home with filters for
status and type, and counts for Total Plans, Active, Draft and
Archived. The home's manager also sees a Deleted plans button there.
